Dr. Jorge A. Castorena-Gonzalez Tulane University School of Medicine, USA

Dr. Jorge Castorena received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Physics from the University of Guanajuato in Mexico and subsequently obtained his Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the University of Missouri. The focus of his research has been to understand the mechanisms that regulate the function of the lymphatic system in health and disease. He has paid particular attention to investigating the link between dysfunction of the lymphatic vasculature and obesity and metabolic syndrome.
At present, there are no established cures or treatments for lymphatic diseases, including lymphedema. In the U.S., breast cancer-related lymphedema patients make up the largest group of patients afflicted with this disease and obesity is a known risk factor. Jorge hopes that his research will contribute to the understanding of the underlying mechanisms leading to lymphatic system dysfunction and the development of novel therapies for secondary lymphedema patients.
