Abstract
This paper addresses the critical issue of poor facilities data management within the real estate industry. Traditional data management strategies have led to outdated, inaccurate and siloed data — a situation with detrimental impacts on decision making, capital planning and building optimisation. The paper provides practical advice on transitioning to better data management, particularly by bringing all facilities data into a central, easily accessible management platform.

Author's Biography
Rick Unruh serves as Akana’s Group Manager for Asset Management Services. He is a professional engineer with over 20 years’ experience. His background in construction and structural design gives him a unique insight into building and structure performance. He has worked on a wide variety of projects including new buildings, piers and wharves, existing building renovations and facility assessments. Since 2015, Rick’s career has focused almost exclusively on asset management and facility condition assessment projects for federal agencies, municipalities and private clients.
Josh Lowe is the Co-Founder and Chief Solutions Officer of AkitaBox. He has a degree in architecture, a background in construction and a penchant for pushing the boundaries of new technologies. Josh is passionate about helping architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) companies, building owners and facility management (FM) professionals make data-driven decisions for operational efficiency and success. In 2016, he co-founded AkitaBox, a software-as-a-service (SaaS) application for proactive building management. AkitaBox offers a new visual way to maintain facilities that help customers improve operational efficiency and reduce risk in their facilities by delivering realworld data of built environments.
