This paper provides an overview of the establishment of pre-exit philanthropy programmes in universities in the US, Australia and Canada, before discussing in detail how Imperial College London started the first pre-exit philanthropy programme at a university in the UK. Readers will learn the history of these programmes and gain insight into the detail of how one university established, grew and stewarded such a programme themselves.

Author's Biography
Kristin Martin is a senior relationship fundraiser with over 10 years of experience in the higher education, heritage and charitable sectors. Originally from Canada, she acts as Development Manager at Imperial College London, where her current focus is fundraising for the Imperial College Business School and the Enterprise Division.
Sarah Flew has a PhD in economic history and her main research area is the history of philanthropy. Her research touches on a variety of themes: the professionalisation of charitable fundraising; gender and philanthropy; corporate philanthropy; anonymous giving; and the theological doctrines that underpin philanthropic action. She acts as Deputy Director of Development at Imperial College London where she manages several fundraising teams.
