Next skilling talent for the intelligent automation revolution

Abstract

The increased use of intelligent automation (IA) is challenging organisations to rethink their business models and focus on agility, consumer centricity, innovation and operations excellence. Recognising the global impact of COVID-19, rapid changes in technology, data-driven decision-making and competition for differentiated talent, the Department of Management Engineering and Consulting (ME&C) prioritised the next skilling of talent to proactively prepare for the increased use of IA. This paper discusses our strategic approach, best practice interventions and diversity of methods to prepare ME&C staff. In alignment with Mayo Clinic’s new strategy to the year 2030, which is a catalyst for staff to develop the skills needed to transform healthcare, ME&C leveraged the 70-20-10 model for learning and development. Various next skilling interventions were adopted to disseminate knowledge and accelerate skill building across the IA continuum of discovery, translation and application. Commercial digital offerings were used, and various Mayo Clinic offerings (eg a series of artificial intelligence [AI] seminars, a journal club and an IA community of practice) were introduced. A crowdsourcing website was created to promote learnings focused on industry insights on AI, robotics, cloud computing, digital transformation and platform scalability. ME&C staff engaged with multidisciplinary teams on the execution of IA strategic priorities. Through diverse interventions, ME&C validated the importance of experimenting, learning from experiences (inside and outside Mayo Clinic) and developing reusable assets such as frameworks and playbooks. While engaging in initiatives that covered a constellation of technologies, staff learnt about the applied value of emerging technologies, business implications and considerations for consumer and staff experiences. We believe that our project will inform other organisations in their quest to build IA capabilities to accelerate business transformation while developing talent.

Author's Biography

Aniket A. Ramekar is a health systems engineer within the Strategy Department. He joined Mayo Clinic in 2019 and has worked as a strategic partner with the Children’s Center and Hospital Operations. He is currently working on a multi-year strategic initiative aimed at transforming healthcare. This effort is focused on new and remodelled physical spaces with integrated technology such as robotics and automation to better support the evolving needs of patients. Using quantitative and qualitative problem-solving skills, he has significantly contributed to several initiatives by partnering with leaders to advance the organisation’s strategic priorities. He has a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from the University of Pune, India, and a master of science in engineering management from Northeastern University, Boston.

Emily J. Bloomquist is Senior Manager of the Non-Employee Access Program within the Operational Risk Management Department at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Previously, she served as Senior Project Manager in the Strategy Department and the Management Engineering and Consulting Department. She has led enterprise-wide programmes and projects in partnership with leadership to advance multidisciplinary innovation, and she ensures that persons who are not Mayo Clinic employees have appropriate levels of access within Mayo Clinic. Before joining Mayo Clinic, Emily was an information technology manager and a technical project manager, and she co-founded an enterprise resource planning consulting company. She was a founding board member of a non-profit that benefits an Ecuadorian orphanage.

Janine R. (Coelho) Kamath is Executive Director of Mayo Clinic International. Previously, she served as Chair of the Department of Management Engineering and Consulting and is an assistant professor of healthcare systems engineering at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. Before joining Mayo Clinic, Janine was a manager at two large pharmaceutical companies. At Mayo Clinic, she has advanced and led multiple strategic initiatives on digital and platform environment; operations optimisation; international business growth; diversity, equity and inclusion; care model transformation; core process engineering and quality, affordability and service. Janine is engaged with various national and international leadership and governance committees. She has a passion for entrepreneurship, diverse talent growth, learning and driving results through empowered, high-performing teams. Janine is the Board Chair and President Emeritus of the Association for Internal Management Consultants. She serves as a course director and has presented at national and international conferences and educational programmes. She has published papers in peer-reviewed journals and authored book chapters and a book on the legacy of management engineering and consulting at Mayo Clinic. Janine participates in professional and community organisations and academic institutions, including college and high school student education and mentorship programmes. She has received multiple awards and professional commendations.

Dorothy A. Larsen is a director supporting the Strategy Consulting Services Division within the Strategy Department at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In this role, she provides administrative leadership and strategic direction and serves as a key partner to Mayo Clinic sites; administration and clinical, education and research areas. She partners with senior leaders to drive innovation, challenge the status quo and implement solutions and programmes to advance strategic priorities. She also serves as a thought partner and project liaison outside the Strategy Department to proactively identify and communicate business needs. During her career at Mayo Clinic, she has served in various roles in areas such as Nursing Service, Surgical Services, Human Resources, Revenue Cycle and, most recently, Management Engineering and Consulting (now known as Strategy Consulting Services). She has received an appointment as an instructor in healthcare systems engineering, which recognises the importance of demonstrated academic promise of scholarly activities. In addition, she has received Mayo Clinic’s Quality Fellows Program Gold certification, which recognises demonstrated success of competence, application and scholarship in quality excellence activity.
