The core aim is to explore how technological advancements, particularly in data analytics and cognitive artificial intelligence (AI), are redefining procurement’s role, facilitating cross-functional collaboration and driving innovative practices. The scope of this paper encompasses the historical perspective of procurement’s underestimated strategic potential, its current integration into various organisational facets and the profound impact of AI and data analytics in enhancing procurement’s efficacy and strategic value. Readers can expect to gain a comprehensive understanding of the strategic transformation of procurement, particularly how it has moved beyond traditional cost management to become a central player in innovation, risk management and sustainability efforts. The paper provides insights into the practical applications of data analytics and AI in procurement, showcasing how these technologies enable predictive decision making, enhance supplier relationship management and contribute to effective risk assessments and budget forecasting. Author's Biography

Alan J. Rice Alan Rice is a distinguished procurement executive with over 25 years’ global experience in procurement, strategic sourcing and supply chain management. Known for challenging norms and delivering exceptional results, he has managed billions of dollars of spend worldwide. His expertise was honed at a Fortune 500 global industrial manufacturer, where he oversaw the purchase and logistics of nearly 1 million tons of fuels annually, optimising costs and global transportation. His experience also includes significant roles at various Fortune 500 companies. At a global telecom company, Alan led a major restructuring of the indirect procurement organisation, introducing new structures, training plans, policies and category management. As the head of procurement at a global apparel manufacturer, he established a procurement division post-spin-off and implemented a new category management process. Similar achievements followed at a global telecom manufacturer and an alcoholic beverage distributor, where he built procurement groups from scratch, focusing on staff development, best practices and innovation. Recently, he played a pivotal role in helping to establish a new procurement department for one of the USA’s leading water distribution companies. Alan has a bachelor’s degree in international affairs and a master’s in supply chain management. He is an esteemed speaker at industry forums and also contributes to industry articles on artificial intelligence’s (AI’s) role in procurement. His deep expertise spans sectors such as food and beverage, energy, logistics, telecom and technology, coupled with his adeptness in strategic sourcing, technology, innovation and organisational design, all of which give him a unique perspective on today’s fast-changing business environment.
