Abstract
Metadata clean-up (or remediation) projects can be time-consuming, stressful and, at some point, inevitable if metadata are retained. Having a plan before starting is paramount not only to a successful project, but also to prevent the waste of valuable resources. As this paper will show, determining which aspects of a clean-up project are most important is the key to ending the project with quality metadata — regardless of the metadata schema or metadata management system or the rationale for the clean-up.

Author's Biography
Jason Smith is the Metadata Librarian at the Medical University of South Carolina. In this capacity, he has overseen a migration and multiple clean-up projects and works closely with the Resource and Education Services Librarians to ensure the catalogue works for all users. He holds a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of South Carolina.
