Firefighting in heritage buildings

Author's Biography

Steve Emery CMIFireE is an independent fire consultant specialising in heritage buildings. He has always been interested in the historic environment and during the late 1980s, after 15 years as a firefighter, he became the fire safety officer for Bath. In 2001 he was seconded to English Heritage and Historic England, where he was involved with the four-year COST C17 project, sitting on two working groups. In 2008 he chaired the Salvage Training Group for the London Emergency Planning Committee and set up the international salvage training course ‘Working with the emergency services’. From 2016 until 2022 he was the fire officer for the University of Oxford before creating Heritage Fire Consultancy Limited. He chairs the Institution of Fire Engineers special interest group for heritage buildings and has written a number of guides on fire safety in heritage buildings, including ‘Guide to the fire resistance of historic timber panel doors’.
