Abstract
Over the last few years, there has been a growing movement within organisations to improve the alignment of cybersecurity efforts with business objectives. But what does this mean? And can this really be accomplished? If the answer is ‘yes’, how should this be done? And when will it be known that the alignment is right? To begin answering these important questions, it is essential first to answer a different question: ‘Why is alignment so important today’? And to effectively understand the ‘why’, there is a need to reflect on the past.

Author's Biography
Candy Alexander , CISSP CISM, is an international award-winning cybersecurity executive with over 30 years of experience. She is currently the CISO at NeuEon and cyber practice lead, assisting companies improve their cyber risk and security programs through business alignment. Additional contributions to the profession include lectures on the topic of cybersecurity and the progression of the profession, being elected twice as the ISSA International President and being Chief Architect for the Cyber Security Career Lifecycle. She is also the Inaugural President and past Board Member of the ISSA Education and Research Foundation. Ms Alexander has been instrumental in establishing the annual ISSA/ESG research project to better understand the challenges faced by cybersecurity professionals worldwide.
