Abstract
The built environment contributes 37 per cent of global CO2 emissions, with almost half of this coming from energy used in buildings. How can all buildings, both old and new, become more sustainable and achieve net zero status? It takes the right technology and solutions, but also a fundamental understanding of what carbon emissions are and what they mean for the built environment. This paper defines the types of carbon, explores the difference between net zero carbon and zero carbon, and breaks down specific steps on how to strategise, digitise and measure the decarbonisation of a building.

Author's Biography
Andre Marino is the Senior Vice President of Digital Buildings line of business at Schneider Electric, the global leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation. He believes strongly that the buildings of the future should be more efficient, resilient, people-centric and sustainable while aiming to achieve net zero carbon goals. Andre is an electrical and telco engineer with over 20 years’ experience in software and industrial automation. He has experience leading multinational teams at Schneider Electric and other large technology companies. He has been with Schneider Electric since 2010 and has held a wide variety of global senior management positions in the Industry and Automation business unit. He studied applied mathematics, earned a BA in electronic engineering from Maua, a BA in economics from FIA/USP and an Executive MBA from Insper. Andre is a board member and co-founder of LarPlasticos, a market leader in circular economy in Brazil. Andre is Brazilian, from Sao Paulo and now resides in Boston, MA, United States.
