Abstract
With Internet of Things (IoT) now in the forefront of building construction and operation as well as plans to get people back into buildings post- COVID-19, it is more important than ever to ensure your cyber security strategy is able to keep up with advancements and protect your tenants and your assets. This paper will explain the cyber security risks inherent in a smart building and what you can do to address those risks from the very beginning with a well-designed strategy in line with the construction of a smart building or the retrofit of an existing building to be ‘smart’. You will understand not only the importance of a cyber smart strategy but also the overall approach and specific steps and components required to develop the strategy.

Author's Biography
Jeff Ewing is a CISSP with over 30 years’ technology and cyber security experience within the commercial real estate markets. As Vice President of Cyber Operations for 5Q, Jeff has developed programmes for assessing cyber maturity for both corporate and building networks and helped build the first security operations centre (SOC) focused on building OT networks, endpoints and identities. He regularly speaks to local educational groups regarding careers in cyber security and is an active member of the Real Estate Cybersecurity Consortium.
Russ Farr is the Director of Cyber Security Engineering at 5Q. Russ has over 15 years’ technical and business experience in multiple areas of cyber security, including OT/IoT security, security/risk management, asset security, security architecture/engineering, network security, identity and access management (IAM) and security operations. Recently, he has been involved in the design and implementation of security assessments and testing, including real estate building cyber security assessments, vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, disaster recovery planning and awareness training development.
Wade Hughes joined 5Q as CEO in 2015. Channelling over 30 years’ experience in Big 4 accounting, consultancy and technology entrepreneurialism, Wade has been instrumental in accelerating 5Q’s growth and maturity to become the authority in IT and cyber security for the commercial real estate industry. Wade’s specific focus with 5Q is identifying client and industry needs, then ensuring 5Q continually evolves to deliver exceptional client service and operational excellence.
