Abstract
Environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives and related emerging regulations will have an impact on real estate business and the information management requirements around it. This paper describes the fundamental impact of ESG in terms of what real estate professionals will be required to set forward in view of future regulatory compliance. Regulations under construction today by various regulatory organisations are discussed, as are some views on the upcoming ESG-related accounting principles. In addition, the paper provides views on how to address the challenge of improving building portfolio performance over its life cycle in view of its ecological footprint.

Author's Biography
Erik Jaspers career in IT spans over 40 years and started in manufacturing automation at Philips Electronics. For the last 24 years Erik has been working for Planon, the leading smart sustainable building management software vendor. Having held senior management positions in developing Planon’s software solutions, Erik is currently working on the company’s product strategy and innovation policies. Erik has contributed to multiple publications on IT and facility management (FM) subjects, including IFMA publications ‘Work on the Move’ (2011, 2016, 2021), ‘Technology for Facility Managers’ (2012, 2017) and the (German) GEFMA publications ‘CAFMHandbuch (2018) and ‘BIM in Immobilienbetrieb’ (2022). He has authored numerous articles on technology for FM in magazines such as FMJ and the Corporate Real Estate Journal and is a regular speaker at real estate and FM conferences around the world. Erik is IFMA Fellow, member of the IFMA EMEA Board, member of the IFMA IT Community Leadership team and Special Advisor to the IFMA Foundation Board of Trustees.
Peter Ankerstjerne has more than 30 years’ experience covering most aspects of facility management (FM), service management, outsourcing, marketing and strategy. Peter has a long record of workplace and FM experience, including several senior executive positions with industry-leading companies such as ISS, WeWork and JLL. At Planon, he is responsible for strategy development, strategic alliances, marketing, communication and Chairman of Planon North America. Peter holds an MBA and Bachelor’s degree in international marketing management from the Copenhagen Business School (CBS). He has served on several advisory boards, including the Strategic Advisory Board at the International Association of Outsourcing Professionals (IAOP). He is an active member and Fellow of the International Facility Management Association (IFMA), where he also serves on the global Board of Directors. From 2020 to 2022 Peter was Chairman of the Board and today he serves as the Immediate Past Chair and member of the Executive Committee.
