Abstract
Inclusion, Diversity, and Health Equity (IDHE) are important strategies that healthcare organisations must address to ensure that the communities they serve are heard, well represented and cared for in the most appropriate way. At Stanford Medicine Partners (SMP), a medical foundation founded by Stanford University School of Medicine and Stanford Health Care (SHC), we embraced and committed to having a diverse workforce through creation of a culture of inclusion, professional fulfilment and respect. In caring for a diverse population throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, we are unified by excellence as the standard of care, and, together, we are healing humanity through science and compassion one patient at a time. We recognised the importance of creating a clear roadmap and development of a strategic plan to set the foundation, practical vision and strategies needed to advance IDHE initiatives. This paper will share our strategies of elevating IDHE as a Strategic Priority; Positioning the Organisation as an IDHE Thought Partner; Investing in Our People; and Measuring for Accountability and Success and in Creating New Ways to Seek a Balanced Input on Solving IDHE Matters and Developing Mechanisms to Measure the IDHE Culture. These four strategies have guided us in co-creating an action plan with specific measurable accomplishments related to each strategy. Learnings have centred around developing progressive, inclusive processes; advancing continuous, comprehensive learning and development; providing effective and meaningful IDHE events and activities; implementing an IDHE dashboard tool; creating IDHE leadership programmes for under-represented staff; and forming strategic partnerships to address medical disparities. And we have seen the value and benefit of incorporating diversity, equity and inclusion into the organisation’s values through a creative strategic planning process and three-year plan.

Rochelle Noone , MS, is vice president of human resources, Diversity & Inclusion for Stanford Medicine Partners. Rochelle is an experienced healthcare leader with over 20 years of human resources leadership experience. Throughout her established career, Rochelle has adopted an in-depth knowledge of organisational effectiveness, employee relations and engagement. She has a BA in communications from the University of Memphis and master’s in human resources and organisational development from the University of San Francisco. She holds a Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion from the Yale School of Management and is a certified executive coach and facilitator. Rochelle served as the vice president of human resources for Planned Parenthood, where she led development and execution of the human resources strategic plan and created initiatives that helped promote a unified organisational culture, and facilitated workshops on Planned Parenthood’s diversity programme called the Mind Sciences on Difference. Prior to Planned Parenthood, Rochelle served as the Director of Human Resources at Telecare Corporation, a behavioural healthcare organisation. At Telecare, Rochelle oversaw the human resources generalist practices, developed strategies for employee engagement, and led the labour-management negotiation process. Rochelle has participated as a speaker at the DEI Solutions Global Inclusion Forum, April 2021; Skillate’s Virtual Summit on Inclusion & Diversity, in December of 2020; and at the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Conference in March of 2022. Rochelle is currently an Advisory Council Member at Cal State East Bay and a member of the Stanford Medicine Diversity Cabinet.
Michael O’Connell , MHA, FACHE, FACMPE, is interim chief operating officer for RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group in New Jersey with 12 hospitals, 3,500 providers, 5,000 employees, 320 clinics and 2 million ambulatory visits annually; he provides executive leadership and strategic direction towards creation of a high performing medical group. Previously, he was COO for Stanford Medicine Partners (SMP), part of Stanford Medicine and Sanford Health Care in Palo Alto, CA, and was actively involved in the development of SMP’s Inclusion, Diversity, and Health Equity (IDHE) Strategic Plan. He has worked as a consultant for the Advisory Board Company and served in four c-suite hospital and medical group leadership roles at Cleveland Clinic. He is the president of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) affiliate chapter of the California Association of Healthcare Leaders (CAHL) with 1,500 ACHE members. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) and provides strategic governance direction to both organisations. He is an ACHE Fellow and Fellow of MGMA’s American College of Medical Practice Executives. He has a bachelor of science degree from University of Illinois and a master of health administration degree from St. Louis University.
