Mitigating potential morale and revenue disruption during new provider onboarding

Abstract

While the COVID-19 pandemic caused a pause in some provider recruitment, the fundamental growth in physician demand will continue to outpace supply for the near future. Thus, it is more important than ever for a healthcare organisation to excel in provider recruitment, onboarding and retention. Establishing a positive relationship with a provider during the onboarding phase is an investment in provider morale and retention as well as in reduced revenue disruption caused by provider turnover. After presenting an overview of provider recruitment and retention trends, this paper provides a comprehensive picture of effective new provider onboarding. It then provides several options for streamlining processes and adopting technology to support onboarding. These ideas can contribute to an excellent learning experience, making the new provider more effective and productive earlier in practice establishment. Successful onboarding is not only beneficial to the overall organisation but also creates a positive relationship with the new provider that is foundational to long-term provider satisfaction and retention.

Author's Biography

Leslie R. Jebson Leslie Jebson MHA, MBA, FACHE, FACMPE currently serves as an executive and faculty instructor at Texas A&M Health. His primary areas of expertise include physician recruitment, strategic planning and service line development. Leslie is recognised nationally as a healthcare operations and organisational improvement author and presenter, with over 100 presentations and publications.

Jeanne M. Goche Jeanne Goche MA, JD has been leading healthcare organisations out of adverse situations and back on track towards long-term sustainability since 2008 as part of the Solutions in Health Care Management team. An executive leader and strategic consultant, her firm’s products offer meaningful value to the organisations served. She collaborates with clients to set new strategic and operational objectives, rebuild financial operations, engage with clinical providers and enhance quality of care. Jeanne credits her abilities to experience at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC), where her general administrative skills were honed in partnership with a strong financial background. While there, Jeanne built revenue cycle processes to address the booming managed care sector.
