Abstract
This paper explains the threats that the COVID-19 pandemic poses to the security of organisations from an insider threat perspective, as well as summarising some of the drivers of dishonesty and discovering how employees may be presented with the opportunity to commit fraud and theft, have an underlying motivation or be in a position to rationalise their behaviour. The paper also examines how the insider threat has evolved over time, focusing on how attitudes, greed and technology have enabled employees to defraud their employers. It also looks at how blurred lines and white lies can lead to fraudulent behaviour, as well as recommendations on how to keep your company safe from insider threats.

Author's Biography
Tracey Carpenter is Cifas' Insider Threat Manager. Before joining Cifas at the beginning of 2017, Tracey worked in the financial services sector, identifying and investigating internal fraud, as well as looking at the insider threat from a strategic viewpoint. Tracey is always looking for new ways to support Cifas members in combating the threat that dishonest employees pose to their businesses. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, she worked with Cifas members to help them understand the risks that home working posed, and she has continued to advise on how they can protect themselves with a hybrid or full working from home approach. Tracey recognises that the insider threat is a shared responsibility that affects many areas of an organisation, so she has focused her efforts on encouraging teams to collaborate, bridging the gap between HR and fraud investigators, and educating organisations on the risks associated with a poor pre-employment screening process. Tracey recently completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Fraud and Financial Crime and co-teaches some of the Cifas Fraud and Cyber Academy courses.
