Abstract
When Paul Winstone first qualified as a chartered surveyor over 50 years ago, there was no requirement from the RICS to undertake continuing professional development. Surveyors were limited to providing professional services for which they were suitably qualified. Fortunately, Paul’s company gave him the opportunity to develop expertise and specialise, first in asbestos, then health and safety, and latterly defects analysis leading to expert witness requirements. As he looks back in retirement over a lifetime of experience, he argues that those in his privileged position owe it to the wider surveying community who do not have the corporate benefits of in-house training to disseminate the valuable lessons gained.

Author's Biography
Paul Winstone DipBS FRICS ACIArb MIIRSM is a former chartered building surveyor, Fellow of the RICS and a director of Watts Group Ltd. He is 70 years old and has recently retired after 50 years in the profession. Throughout his career he has been a diligent supporter of the RICS, both in presenting seminars, speaking at conferences and as an author of articles and publications. The latter include the production and illustration of A Measure of Mirth (1995), a collection of after-dinner stories from the RICS, with contributions from the ‘great and the good’ of the property world (at that time) in aid of the RICS Benevolent Fund. Paul was also the technical editor and major contributor to the RICS guidance note (GN 38/2011) ‘Asbestos and its implications for surveyors and their clients’.
