Preparing procurement professionals: Your organisation’s competitive advantage

Abstract

Skilled procurement professionals are in high demand, especially after the supply chain disruptions organisations have faced over the past year. However, this paper finds that current-state procurement talent development is not adequate. Procurement faces a leaky talent pipeline, as young professionals see the discipline as a mere stepping stone to other more lucrative career paths. This sentiment is amplified by the structure and focus of most organisations’ talent development programmes for procurement, which offer only the most basic and traditional approaches and focus on yesterday’s skill sets rather than future-ready capabilities. This paper explores the root causes of the procurement talent problem and offers actionable solutions for building more relevant, productive, attractive development programmes.

Author's Biography

Marisa Brown is the Senior Principal Research Lead for Supply Chain Management at APQC. She leads APQC’s supply chain team that conducts research to provide insights into benchmarks, best practices and process improvements in supply chain planning, procurement, logistics, manufacturing, product development and innovation. A supply and demand chain executive ‘2020 Pro to Know’ and ‘Women in Supply Chain’ award recipient, Marisa is a leader in supply chain with more than 25 years’ experience in business, research, writing, speaking and consulting.

Mercy Harper is a writer with APQC. She works with APQC’s researchers to create whitepapers, case studies and reports for a global business audience. She has more than ten years’ experience in business, non-profit and academic communications. She has a PhD from Rice University and an undergraduate degree from Rutgers University.

Kate Vitasek is a faculty member for Graduate and Executive Education at the University of Tennessee’s Haslam College of Business Administration. Her award-winning research has been featured in six books including: ‘Vested Outsourcing: Five Rules That Will Transform Outsourcing’ and ‘Vested: How P&G, McDonald’s and Microsoft are Redefining Winning in Business Relationships’. Her most recent book, ‘Strategic Sourcing in the New Economy: Harnessing the Potential of Sourcing Business Models for Modern Procurement’, has been widely endorsed by some of the most progressive procurement leaders across the world.

Bonnie Keith is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Tennessee and is the founder of The Forefront Group — a boutique consulting company specialising in strategic sourcing and a certified Vested Center of Excellence. She is also one of the authors of Strategic Sourcing in the New Economy: Harnessing the Potential of Sourcing Business Models for Modern Procurement.
