Harnessing data to strategise for digital endowment reporting

Abstract
Digital endowment reporting is becoming an industry standard in higher education and philanthropy. NC State implemented a digital endowment reporting platform by leveraging efficient project planning and management, a strategic communication schedule and in-depth data analyses for informed decision making. Through the topics explored within, readers can expect to have a better understanding of the preparation needed for a successful digital transition and explore the role datadriven conclusions play in guiding a project of this nature to a rewarding conclusion. A willingness to adapt to issues as they arose to maintain flexibility and a commitment to working cohesively as a team were common threads throughout the project. This paper will detail NC State’s experiences and provide suggestions for how the steps that were taken apply more generally to digital endowment reporting as a whole.

Author's Biography
Tommy King is a Donor Services Specialist at North Carolina State University where his responsibilities include the endowment reporting process, data analysis and technology support for the Donor Services team. Prior to joining NC State in 2019, Tommy was a student worker in Institutional Advancement at Carthage College and was a data analytics intern at Racine Vocational Ministry. Tommy holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Carthage College and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in computer science at NC State.
Kristy Wasilewski is an Assistant Director of Donor Services at North Carolina State University. She has more than 10 years of experience documenting and improving processes in nonprofits and higher education. Her specialties at NC State include streamlining the centralised endowment reporting process, overseeing distinguished professorship agreements and metrics and helping to manage the corporate gift agreement review process. Kristy holds a bachelor’s degree in English/Communications from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and a master’s degree in public administration from NC State.
Sarah Thomas is the Director of Donor Services at North Carolina State University, where she oversees the operations of gift agreements, naming opportunities, endowment reporting, the distinguished professorship programme and gift compliance. Prior to joining NC State, Sarah was the Project Manager of Gift Management at the University of Houston. Her focus was on process improvement, implementing large projects, and policy creation. She has more than 15 years of non-profit experience and more than six years of higher education experience and has worked with the following companies: Girl Scouts, Camp Fire USA, American Red Cross, University of Alaska Anchorage, University of Houston and NC State. She also hosts a monthly call entitled, ‘Hot Topics in Donor Relations/Gift Administration Compliance’. She holds a bachelor’s degree in cultural anthropology from Baylor University. Sarah’s expertise is in programme building, process improvement, team development, policy creation and partnership building. She takes an interdisciplinary approach to solve problems and deploys quantitative and qualitative research techniques to find root cause issues.
