Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has required everyone to rethink their traditional approach to live–work–play, radically shaking up the design philosophy of workplaces and office buildings. The paper discusses how employers can create a high-performance workplace, starting with an assessment of current space utilisation and a deep understanding of what employees want from their place of work, today and in the future. A human-centric approach to the workplace can make a significant difference to both the bottom line and the employee experience. Employers that unlock this potential will be rewarded with previously unrealised abilities, energy and commitment. The paper concludes that, post-pandemic, the need for physical and collaborative working space is still strong, but traditional ways of working have changed for good.

Author's Biography
Sheila Botting FRICS, FCMC is principal and president of Avison Young’s Professional Services practice across the Americas and is a member of the company’s global corporate executive. Through her executive career, Sheila has led a number of multidisciplinary real estate teams and assignments across the global industry with corporate occupiers, owners and investors, earning the reputation as one of the ‘go to’ global commercial real estate advisers. Recently Sheila has been renowned for her expertise and guidance in developing transformational workplace strategies and environments, creating some of the best ‘high-performance’ workplaces to inform hybrid and agile workstyles. Prior to Avison Young, Sheila was senior partner and Canadian real estate leader with Deloitte LLP and executive managing director of another commercial real estate services entity. Through her career, Sheila has published for global media and research organisations and earned many awards and distinctions, including CREW Network’s Global Most Distinguished Women Award and Canadas WXN’s Top 100 Most Powerful Woman Award. She has also served as a member of the University of Guelph Real Estate Program Advisory Board, along with the University of Waterloo Faculty of Environmental Studies Pragma Counsel.
