Fire protection: Installation of fire sprinkler systems to residential and mixed-use buildings

Abstract

This paper highlights the need for fire protection systems and why they should be installed, the selection of the correct system to suit the property style, layout, fire risk and also the type of system that meets the budget of the end user. The paper also outlines the requirements to install sprinkler systems throughout the UK, as they are not consistent due to the devolved administrations.

Author's Biography

Alan Crichton is a fire systems project and design engineer with over 20 years’ experience in water-based systems, fire risk assessments, fire alarms and developing complex systems, as well as maintenance planning and quality assurance and auditing. Alan began his career as a draughtsman in a fabricator company and has built his way up to director level within the fire systems industry. He is experienced in design and project management of sprinkler systems for industrial, residential, commercial, leisure and health care properties. He has prepared manufacture drawings, designed systems and thus has first-hand experience and a sound understanding of the relevant guidance and standards. He has designed water-based fire suppression systems including sprinklers, deluge, foam and water spray (low pressure and high pressure). Alan has led design and drawing offices and managed subcontractors and contractors and has been in charge of design control and quality procedures. Furthermore, he has managed procurement of parts and fabrication, as well as risk health and safety and manage teams and contracts. He has previously undertaken site investigations and reports.
