Abstract
The internet of things (IoT) is transforming the passenger experience and operational efficiencies at commercial service airports. Strategies and tactics employed to implement IoT infrastructure have direct impacts on successful decision-making processes and risk mitigation, especially at small hub airports. This paper identifies best practices in IoT in the aviation industry over the past five years. Airport executives and information technology (IT) managers can benefit from this work to create business value within their organisation.

Author's Biography
Cathryn Stephens is the Assistant Airport Director in Eugene, Oregon, holding several management positions at the Eugene Airport (EUG) over the past 13 years, and currently oversees all day-to-day operations at EUG. She holds a BS in Technical Journalism from Oregon State University and an MS in Applied Information Management from the University of Oregon, earning the prestigious Capstone Recognition Award for the original version of this paper. Cathryn is an Accredited Airport Executive (AAE) and serves on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) and as the small hub airport representative on the Airport Cooperative Research Program Oversight Committee (AOC). She is past president of the Northwest Chapter of AAAE and of the Oregon Airport Management Association. In her local community, she serves as an ex-officio representative on the Travel Lane County Board of Directors and as a member of the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Council.
