Abstract

Global e-commerce in the consumer retail sector could not exist without the development, and more importantly acceptance, of sophisticated logistics strategies. The traditional forward supply chain with its inbound and outbound logistics is understood as significant to competitiveness and enterprise value. Reverse logistics, on the other hand, is that largely invisible yet widely used functionality that is increasingly having a very real impact in this economic environment. In fact, reverse logistics is in many ways inseparable from the growth of global e-commerce in the consumer retail sector. The functional elements of reverse logistics are similar to those of its traditional forward logistics counterpart and yet many striking differences exist. The reverse supply chain has a character both in business operations and in consumer buying habits that is as complex and challenging as it is essential to market performance. The strategic development of reverse logistics systems and their procurement from third-party service providers are systematically examined in this paper.

Author's Biography

Jonathan R. Todd Jonathan Todd is a partner in the transportation and logistics practice with the US law firm Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan & Aronoff LLP. His work focuses exclusively on the transactional and regulatory needs of large enterprise shippers, carriers and intermediaries, as each manage traffic flows through global supply chains. Jonathan provides counsel on global transportation and logistics procurement, contract and service terms drafting and negotiation, operational best practices, risk mitigation strategies, industry mergers and acquisitions, licensing and permits, regulatory compliance and defence during regulatory investigations. He frequently speaks and writes on supply chain-related matters and presently serves on the Surface Transportation Security Advisory Committee by appointment from the US TSA Administrator and the District Export Council for Northern Ohio by appointment from the US Commerce Secretary. Jonathan served in industry prior to private practice as senior corporate counsel for a large international transportation provider with operations in the US, Western Europe and Southeast Asia. Jonathan holds an MBA in supply chain management in addition to his law degree. He is also a licensed US customs broker and a certified supply chain professional — fellow (CSCP-F) through the American Production and Inventory Controls Society (APICS).
