Cognitive computing-based sourcing intelligence

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) and cognitive computing (CC)-based solutions are bringing about major changes in the way people live and work. For example, through AI-based navigation on smartphones it has become effortless to find a good, specific type of restaurant in an unfamiliar city. Soon a person will not even have to think about getting to the restaurant because the car will drive itself there. Similarly to navigation of the physical landscape, CC can be used to more efficiently and effectively navigate the supplier landscape. Which vendor is good at what? Which vendor is making progress and developing capabilities in areas of interest? Which vendor may be in organisational turmoil? These are just a few examples of questions that cognitive computing supply chain systems can help answer.

Author's Biography

David Bayba Dave Bayba is a Senior Data Scientist in the Data Governance and Analytics group in Intel’s Global Supply Chain organisation. Dave builds predictive and prescriptive models for supply chain needs at Intel, including in the areas of material quality, inventory planning, forecasting and sourcing intelligence. Dave has been at Intel for 24 years and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering from the University of Arizona and Arizona State University, respectively.

Mani Janakiram has been with Intel for 20 years and has managed several strategic projects in factory operations, capacity planning, process control, data analytics, strategy, Internet of Things (IoT) and supply chain. His 25-plus years’ experience includes the automotive and aerospace industries. Mani holds two patents and has published over 75 papers on supply chain, statistical modelling, capacity modelling, data mining, Lean Six Sigma, factory operations research and process control. Mani is an adjunct professor at Arizona State University, School of Supply Chain/Business. He holds a PhD in industrial and systems engineering from Arizona State University and an MBA from Thunderbird School of Global Management. He is a recognised Six Sigma Master Black Belt and also an APICS certified supply chain professional (CSCP). Recently he was recognised by Drexel University and CIO.com as one of the Top 50 analytics executives. He is also an ASCM Fellow.
