Abstract
A survey completed by operating theatre/operating room (OR) teams showed that a paper-based emergency surgery booking system was not fit for purpose, resulting in poor situational awareness. A business case was created for the purchase and implementation of an electronic system for a UK acute NHS hospital. As a result of the change, OR staff, surgeons and anaesthetists had significantly heightened situational awareness. While they faced a number of challenges, users felt that an electronic system was overall advantageous.

Author's Biography
Alistair Steel is a consultant in anaesthesia at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn and a Consultant in Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine at the Magpas Air Ambulance. He trained in London and the East of England. His interests include emergency anaesthesia and quality improvement.
Shrestha Sinha is a speciality doctor in anaesthesia at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn. Born in London and raised on the south coast of the United Kingdom, he attended the University College London before graduating with a Bachelor’s of Medicine and Surgery intercalating in Human Genetics. Training in the East of England in Anaesthesia, Dr Sinha has developed interests in paediatric and emergency anaesthesia as well as ergonomics and research.
