Munich Airport's Terminal 2: A successful airport-airline collaboration

Abstract

This paper explores the unique airport-airline collaboration between the Munich Airport operating company, Flughafen München GmbH (FMG) and Deutsche Lufthansa AG in the joint planning, financing, construction and operation of Munich Airport's Terminal 2. It continues — from the FMG perspective — with an examination of key elements of this partnership and the benefits thereof for both airport and airline over a period of time. It concludes with a look at how the ‘Munich model’ is being employed to tackle current and future challenges such as infrastructure expansion, capacity restraints and increasing restrictions resulting from tighter security regulations on passenger traffic at a major international hub.
