Abstract
From October 2017 through January 2019, the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center (NCDHC) undertook a content management system migration of over 44,000 library digital collection objects, comprising over 2 million individual files of varying types and their associated metadata, produced over a ten-year period. This case study describes NCDHC’s experience evaluating potential systems, navigating vendor relationships, exporting and improving data, migration logistics, adapting existing workflows, and communicating with stakeholders.

Author's Biography
Stephanie Williams is a Software Developer for the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center. Since receiving an MS in library science from the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2008, she has focused on digital library technology, managing repository architectures and developing applications to aid digitisation, description and public service workflows for archival and special collections digitisation projects. Her interests include data interoperability, leveraging cloud infrastructure for library applications, and contributing to open source software initiatives.
Lisa Gregory is the Program Coordinator for the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center, where she helps set priorities and direction to ensure the Center remains responsive to partner and user needs while meeting the evolving demands of digital initiatives. She has also worked for the State Library of North Carolina’s Digital Information Management Program, gaining experience in digitisation project management and digital preservation outreach and education. She has an MA in English literature from the University of New Mexico, and an MS in library science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a Digital Curation Fellow.
Kristen Merryman is the Digital Projects Librarian for the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center, where she oversees the day-to-day digitisation work for the Center’s 250 partners. She has also worked at the Durham County Library North Carolina Collection, the North Carolina State University Special Collections Research Center, and the North Carolina State Archives. She holds an MSLS from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an MA in public history from North Carolina State University, and a BA in history and political science from UNC Greensboro.
