Abstract
Financial institutions have a very important intermediation role with respect to savings and the financing of firms and households. to perform this function, financial institutions need financial resources. in spain there are different kinds of financial institution: banks, savings institutions and credit cooperatives; in terms of intermediation, it is the savings institutions that have the most important role. this paper analyses the role of financial institutions in general as well as their need for additional financial resources during a period of crisis. in this context, the paper studies a new way for savings institutions to obtain financial resources: cuotas participativas.

Author's Biography
Francisco Escribano teaches finance at the University of Castilla — La Mancha. He graduated in economics and management and has a PhD in economics. He has considerable experience in teaching subjects related to public finance, corporate finance and health economics. His research interests include financial systems, health economics and corporate fixed income. He has participated in international conferences and his work has been published in prestigious journals.
Isabel Pardo teaches applied economics at the University of Castilla — La Mancha. She graduated in economics and management and has a PhD in economics. She has considerable experience in teaching subjects related to monetary and fiscal policy and the European economy. Her research interests include financial systems, health economics and local and regional policy. She has participated in international conferences and her work has been published in prestigious journals.
