Abstract
New building certifications such as WELL, Living Building Challenge and RESET are exploding in popularity because of their focus on occupant comfort and indoor environmental quality — areas that are largely underemphasised by traditional building certifications such as LEED and BREEAM. Typically, building performance and indoor environmental quality data has been gathered through spot testing, which suffers by not always being representative. The advent of affordable and high-quality sensors, however, paired with internet-based monitoring platforms, has revolutionised the ability of IAQ professionals to track — and improve — building performance, finally allowing buildings to talk back to us.

Tom Watson Watson is the Director of Engineering and Projects for indoor environmental consultancy PureLiving China. He has worked in the green building industry for over 13 years, spending the last eight years working in China on the frontline of indoor environmental innovation. He is responsible for the design and execution of IEQ improvement projects throughout Asia, helping clients such as Siemens, Google, Bank of America and McKinsey provide healthy indoor environments.
