Integrated project delivery for building new airport facilities

Abstract

The selection of the project delivery method for airport development projects is an important predictor of the project's outcome. The complexity and risk involved with airport projects is significant and accounts for the largest amount of claims paid for disputes of any commercial construction market sector. Given the lack of future funding to pay for the total amount of projects necessary to support the aviation industry, claims payments would be better spent providing long-term benefit in actual airport facilities. Collaborative teams of key project stakeholders using integrated project delivery (IPD) can deliver a project more successfully than with other traditional delivery methods. IPD leverages early contributions of knowledge and expertise through teamwork, utilisation of new technologies, and allowing all team members to better realise their highest potential while expanding the value they provide throughout the project. Teams are guided by principles of trust, transparency, collaboration, information sharing, common agreement on success and shared risk and reward. IPD is the opportunity to design, build and operate airport facilities efficiently.
