Abstract
Many papers and articles can be found that list the obligations the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) imposes on businesses and that focus on the costs and efforts businesses will need to incur in order to become GDPR compliant, in particular when they process personal data for profiling purposes. This paper sets out the principal arguments for how transparency and compliance with the GDPR can lead to added value for businesses.

Author's Biography
Laura Brodahl is a data protection and privacy lawyer at the Brussels Bar. Laura works with Belgian and international companies, and public entities to find the IP and privacy solutions most tailored to their legal needs. Some of her latest projects include drafting licence- and data-processing agreements, collaborating on readiness assessments in view of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and advising on the implementation of privacy programmes. Laura prides herself on a true passion for her practice area and likes to explore the technical and legal aspects of new technologies, such as connected devices, artificial intelligence, wearables and virtual reality.
Vincent Jocquet is Senior Vice President (SVP), Finance at Sentiance, a European data science scale-up. Vincent is responsible for structuring the capital raising process, aligning with stakeholders, safeguarding privacy, building the team and supporting day-to-day operations. Vincent holds an MSc in economics and is a certified data protection officer.
