Abstract
The world of the security screening checkpoint has changed dramatically due to the events of 25th December, 2009 when Umar Farouk Mutallab, or infamously known as ‘The Underwear Bomber’, successfully carried explosives stitched in his underwear through the security screening checkpoint (SSCP) undetected. As the deployment and implementation of advanced technologies at airport passenger SSCPs are accelerated to detect these items, what does it mean to the airport operator? Terminal facilities will be affected in a number of ways including spatial impacts, structural impacts and passenger wait times. The airport operator needs to be prepared to handle these concerns before they come to their facility.

Author's Biography
Tim Hudson is a registered architect and principal at Gresham, Smith and Partners with more than 20 years of experience. His primary focus is terminal planning and design, terminal renovations and expansions, automated people mover systems, baggage handling systems, explosive detection systems, checked baggage screening systems and passenger security screening checkpoints. In addition, Tim has extensive experience with Transportation Security Administration (TSA) procedures, protocols and facility design requirements, and their facility impacts as they pertain to airport security. He actively participated in the development of the TSA’s ‘Planning Guidelines and Design Standards’ for checked baggage inspection systems.
