Abstract
An assessment of some of the key geopolitical events of 2016 might lead to the conclusion that there are more sources of uncertainty than usual for corporate decision makers to consider. Viewed from the long-term perspective of the economic cycle, however, the influence of geopolitical events looks a lot more muted. In this paper we investigate the question of how much credence to give geopolitics in the context of corporate real estate decisions, and develop a typology that will assist decision makers in distinguishing between largely irrelevant events and more impactful ones, based on their characteristics and degree of linkage with the economic cycle.

Author's Biography
Richard Barkham is a specialist in macro economics, finance and real estate markets. He joined CBRE in 2014 as Executive Director and Global Chief Economist. Prior to taking up his position with CBRE, Richard was Director of Research for the Grosvenor Group, an international business with c. US $10bn of capital under management in real estate. He was also a non-Executive Director of Grosvenor Fund Management where he was involved in fund strategy, risk analysis and capital raising. Richard has extensive academic experience. He is a visiting professor at two leading universities in the UK: University College London and the University of Reading. He holds a PhD in economics from the University of Reading, where he taught in the departments of economics and land management between 1987 and 1998. Richard is the author of two books and numerous academic and industry papers.
Richard Holberton heads EMEA Occupier Research at CBRE. His role is to develop and refine CBRE’s research agenda in this area through market analysis, client briefings and consultancy. Richard is also responsible for the flagship European Occupier Survey. Over the previous three years he led the development of CBRE’s research coverage of the European logistics markets. Richard has extensive experience in the analysis of commercial property markets. Prior to joining CBRE Richard held research posts at the Royal Bank of Scotland advising on lending strategy, and Prudential Portfolio Managers in property fund research. He holds Masters qualifications in Urban & Regional Planning and Property Investment.
