Abstract
Just as Wal-Mart knows where its customers live, so should an airport. Using data from Canada’s national household spending survey, Vancouver Airport Authority has gained an unprecedented insight into the factors that drive household spending on airline tickets at a neighbourhood level in its local market, including what appears to be the stimulative effect of an airport rail link on local spending on air travel.

Author's Biography
Mike Brown has over 30 years’ experience as an airport planner, strategist and economist and currently works for Greater Toronto Airports Authority on a variety of strategic projects. He holds degrees, diplomas and certificates from the University of Oxford, the University of British Columbia and MIT and is a frequent speaker at conferences. Mike is the former senior strategic planner at Vancouver Airport Authority.
