The real meaning of building conservation
Abstract
This paper describes what building conservation really is in that it is not just a technical process but one that requires a broader range of values that uses the reasons why what is being conserved is so important. The latter is known as significance and we define exactly what it is and describe how it is a core ingredient to building conservation. Definitions of conservation are described and the case is made that it should be applied to all older buildings and not just those that receive special protection. This paper also makes the case for much improved training and education as one of the means of generally improving the way all older building are treated.

Author's Biography
John Edwards is Director of Edwards Hart Chartered Surveyors and historic building consultants, formerly Cadw Assistant Director and previously English Heritage. A practitioner dealing with all aspects of building conservation with clients ranging from the National Trust and Somerset House to housing associations and property developers. John has experience in management consultancy, competency research and analysis across the construction industry and development of competency schemes for mainstream and heritage sectors. He is an educationalist and is involved in the development and delivery of training in the UK and beyond. John is also Professor on Practice at the University of Wales Trinity St David.
