Airport provision and air transport dependence in European countries
Abstract
This paper analyses air transport dependence and the level of airport provision in 14 European countries. Based on a study undertaken for Avinor, the analysis includes airports that handled at least 2,000 commercial passengers in 2003. Five elements of air transport demand are analysed: domestic and international travelling frequencies per capita; the volumes of freight and post carried on domestic flights; domestic and international aircraft movements per 1,000 inhabitants; and the modal split and purpose of domestic journeys. Airport provision is analysed in terms of opening hours, ATC service provision, navigation aids, and rescue and fire-fighting services.
