Abstract
Accountable care is a model of health-care delivery that stresses prevention, efficiency, quality and outcomes. It is considered an important step in moving to a value-based healthcare system. Leadership must be willing and able to articulate the message, understand the roadblocks to success and navigate a path forward. This requires a specific skill set not previously stressed in healthcare leadership. This paper reviews the accountable care organisation (ACO) model, examines why it is important and discusses how to succeed.
