Abstract
This paper examines the diverse factors that influence the design and development of commercially sustainable airport facilities for small and medium-sized airports. The focus is on incorporating flexibility into facility design to adapt to changes in these influencing factors, particularly in a privatised airport environment. This discussion reflects the views of an operator of small to medium-sized airports and the changing needs and expectations of passengers.

Author's Biography
Dennis Chant is Managing Director of Queensland Airports Limited (QAL). QAL owns and operates four airports and manages two more for a regional local authority in Australia. It also owns a ground-handling company, Aviation Ground Handling, and an aircraft engineering company, Aviex. Dennis has 44 years’ experience in the aviation, maritime and tourism industries in Australia and internationally. He is the President of Airports Council International’s (ACI) Asia-Pacific Region and is a member of ACI’s World Governing Board. Dennis holds a degree in civil engineering from the Queensland University of Technology and an MBA from the University of Southern Queensland. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Aviation School at Griffith University.
