Audio-visual enterprise at a regional academic archive: Case study of EXTRA

Abstract
In 1977, EXTRA's dynamic mesh of critical exposés, in-depth interviews, short subject documentaries and experimental film represented a turning point for visual media in Utah and launched the careers of numerous artists and journalists, who took advantage of new possibilities in production and pre-recorded programming. In 2014, a grant to digitise this local television newsmagazine became a turning point for the University of Utah's Audio-Visual Archive — a small department of the J. Willard Marriott Library's Special Collections division — helping to redefine its operations and its role within the library. This case study will discuss not only the content and progress of the EXTRA project, but also the significant institutional takeaways for regional archives and academic libraries just beginning to tackle their audio-visual collections.

Author's Biography
Molly Rose Steed is the Assistant Head for Moving Image and Sound Archives in the Special Collections Division at the University of Utah J. Willard Marriott Library. This position involves the curation, management and dissemination of analogue and digital audio and video materials that document the history of Utah and the American West and the supervision of the archivists who help care for and provide access to these unique collections of historic time-based media.
