Opinion: Beyond country risk: A comprehensive approach to address banks’ vulnerabilities

Abstract

Although better than in 2014, the results of the stress tests failed to reassure the markets, at least in the short run. Asset quality and banks’ profitability remain top of investors’ worries. In order to address banks’ vulnerabilities, a comprehensive approach is needed, involving an overhaul of banks’ business models and the reduction of legacy non-performing loans (NPLs). Moreover, regulators and authorities should continue working towards better regulatory harmonisation and the completion of the Banking Union.

Author's Biography

Gregorio De Felice is Head of Research and Chief Economist at Intesa Sanpaolo, Chairman of the International Conference of Commercial Bank Economists (ICCBE) since July 2015 and from 2007 to 2010, Chairman of AIAF, the Italian Association of Financial Analysts. A graduate at Luigi Bocconi University, Milan, Gregorio holds offices at the European Banking Federation (EBF) and at the European Securities and Markets Authority previously (ESMA). He is a member of the Board of Directors of a number of economic associations and foundations and of some pension funds of the Intesa Sanpaolo Group. He is the author of many publications in the fields of monetary policy, financial markets, banking and the management of public debt.
