Abstract
Recent years have not only seen web check-in replacing kiosk check-in, but now mobile check-in is starting to take off too. But what is check-in? Do airlines need it after all, or do they just need notification that the passenger has arrived at the airport? This paper considers whether mobile check-in represents the start of many future mobile services for passengers, such as electronic boarding passes and paperless travel. It concludes that airports should prepare for the mobile passengers of the future.
