Enhancing commercial dwell time through a tailor-made technological solution
Abstract
This paper describes the evolution of Quiport’s management model, from the construction of Mariscal Sucre Airport to an advanced dwell time optimisation strategy, grounded in strong organisational culture and integrated digital infrastructure. From its inception, Quiport conceived the airport as a living, interconnected system, where efficiency is transmitted among stakeholders through a ‘domino effect’. A central element is the digital catalyst, an in-house platform that integrates operational, commercial, environmental, safety, and passenger experience data into a single ecosystem. The system combines artificial intelligence (AI), computer vision, and advanced analytics to shift from reactive management to predictive, proactive decision making, breaking down data silos and democratising information through QUIBot and smart operational dashboards. Dwell time optimisation is directly linked to non-regulated revenues and enhanced passenger experience. Through technological investments in security, migration, biometric boarding, and consumer behaviour analysis, Quiport achieved significant reductions in processing times and increased time for commercial consumption, demonstrating a direct correlation between operational efficiency and economic performance. The model is supported by an expanded equation in which organisational culture (Q-Factor) acts as a systemic performance multiplier, combining knowledge, skills, and positive attitude to generate sustainable structural efficiencies. Altogether, this strategy positions Quito International Airport as a regional benchmark in airport digitalisation, data-driven management, and passenger time monetisation.
