The conservation and restoration of the Great Pagoda at Kew Gardens
Abstract
The Great Pagoda at Kew, constructed in 1761 as part of a pleasure landscape, has undergone a major programme of conservation and restoration to return it to an appearance close to its original form while ensuring long-term structural stability. This paper describes the multidisciplinary approach adopted, combining historical research, architectural conservation, and structural engineering. Particular emphasis is placed on the reinstatement of the pagoda’s ornamental dragons, for which limited historical evidence existed, requiring extensive research, prototyping, and design development. Innovative techniques, including the use of three-dimensional scanning and printing, enabled accurate reproduction while minimising structural loads on the historic fabric. The paper also details the investigation and repair of the masonry, timber floors, and roof structures, addressing issues of shrinkage, loss of lateral restraint, and vertical cracking, while adhering to principles of minimal intervention. The design and implementation of a free-standing scaffold enabled safe access without imposing additional load on the building. Wind testing and bespoke fixing solutions ensured the secure installation of new elements under extreme conditions. The project demonstrates how modern engineering methods and technologies can be integrated with conservation principles to preserve historic structures, enhance public access and ensure their continued resilience within a challenging environment. Author's Biography
is a Director of Hockley & Dawson, a small structural engineering practice near Godalming, Surrey, UK. The practice has a reputation for its work with historic and sensitive structures and well as general structural engineering. It was founded in 1962 by Jack Dawson and Charles Hockley and worked with Michael Manser on his steel and glass houses, including Cliffhanger and the now listed Capel Manor in Kent. Clive joined in 1989 to be the Resident Engineer for the round tower stabilisation project at Windsor Castle, which expanded into the archive project and then the initial phases of the fire restoration project. Clive took on the practice following the retirement of Jack Dawson and with Doug Murray developed the interest in historic structures, working on Hardwick Hall, Tattershall Castle, Dover Castle, Kew Pagoda, and the wind tunnels and airship hanger at Farnborough. Recent projects have included the Master’s House at Ledbury, the Banqueting House, and the South Stair at the Tower and Middle Drawbridge at the Tower of London, Sheerness Church, and numerous other repair and conservation projects at the Tower and Hampton Court. Clive is involved with a conservation project in Jamaica which teaches conservation crafts and skills to local men and women to allow the local Georgian buildings to be conserved, repaired, and reused. He has recently visited St Helena to advise on the possible repair of number of Georgian forts. He is a Trustee of the Gloria e Marco Foundation and the Bulmer Brick & Tile Foundation.
