Optimising biomanufacturing supply chains : Delivering for patients by translating science into differentiated treatments
Abstract
The pharmaceutical sector is undergoing a paradigm shift as advanced modalities move from research to commercial scale. These innovations, while transformative for patients, introduce unprecedented complexity into biomanufacturing and supply chain operations. Against the backdrop of these scientific innovations, the industry is also experiencing significant complexity driven through an unprecedented policy landscape. This paper examines how Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) is leveraging data-driven decision making, artificial intelligence (AI), and adaptive workforce strategies to optimise global supply chains. Drawing on recent disruptions — the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical events, and technological leaps — the paper provides actionable insights for senior supply chain executives on building resilient, agile, and future-ready supply chains. It emphasises the integration of robust data, transparent supplier networks, and workforce development, offering guidance that transcends sector boundaries. Author's Biography
Karin Shanahan is Executive Vice President and Chief Supply Chain and Operations Officer at Bristol Myers Squibb, overseeing product development and supply (PDS), which encompasses product development, quality, manufacturing, global technical services, and supply chain. With nearly 11,000 colleagues worldwide, PDS delivers high-quality, innovative medicines to patients in more than 80 markets. Karin began her pharmaceutical career at Bristol Myers Squibb, holding roles across corporate procurement, global supply chain, and global quality before moving into manufacturing operations, where she led sites in Billerica, MA, and Latina, Italy. After nearly 14 years with Bristol Myers Squibb, she joined Becton-Dickinson as a global operations leader, followed by Catalent Pharmaceuticals, where she led global biologics operations. In 2013, Karin became Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of global operations at Teva Pharmaceuticals, leading global manufacturing science and technology, network strategy, and a network of 25 sites across Europe and the Americas. Prior to her current role, she served as Senior Vice President of Global Biologics and Sterile Operations at Merck. Karin earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and international relations from Rutgers University and a master’s degree in jurisprudence in pharmaceutical and device law from Seton Hall Law School.
