Designing the hybrid financial workplace: Leadership strategies for engagement and retention in the post-pandemic era
Abstract
This paper examines how the 2008 global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic have reshaped the spatial, cultural and managerial foundations of work in the financial services sector. It focuses on the rise of hybrid work as a strategic response to these disruptions, analysing how leaders across banking, insurance, and FinTech have restructured workplaces to retain talent, foster engagement and maintain organisational cohesion. Grounded in anthropological and sociological approaches to work, the paper draws on comparative evidence from North America and Europe. It synthesises literature, workforce survey data and institutional case studies from 2020 to 2024. The findings reveal that hybrid work now functions as both a symbolic and practical expression of a shifting organisational ethos. A model that demands flexibility, challenges norms of presenteeism, and redefines the role of the office. In this context, hybrid models mediate evolving relationships between labour, space and institutional identity, marking a cultural transformation that parallels technological change.
