Transforming healthcare management: The impact of artificial intelligence on leadership and operations
Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping healthcare leadership by combining technological innovation with a focus on human values. This paper examines how AI helps tackle workforce shortages, cost pressures and inequalities. The integration of AI into health care is transforming how services are delivered and managed. As healthcare systems worldwide face significant challenges, such as an ageing population, increasing rates of chronic diseases and rising patient expectations. AI offers innovative solutions to improve efficiency and patient care. In many regions, healthcare providers are overwhelmed, struggling to meet the growing demand for quality services. AI technologies, such as machine learning and natural language processing, are being used to enhance patient engagement, streamline administrative tasks and improve clinical decision making. These tools can analyse large amounts of data to provide personalised care and support, helping healthcare professionals make better-informed decisions. For instance, AI can assist in developing personalised treatment plans, enabling providers to address individual patient needs more effectively. Moreover, AI can automate routine tasks, allowing healthcare staff to focus on more complex and value-added activities, ultimately enhancing the quality of care. Nevertheless, the adoption of AI in healthcare is not without its challenges. Concerns about data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the need for ethical guidelines must be carefully managed to ensure that AI solutions are fair and safe for all patients. By 2030, the vision for AI in health care is to create a more efficient, accessible and patient-centred system. This paper explores the impact of AI on healthcare management, highlighting the opportunities it presents while addressing the necessary considerations for successful implementation. Author's Biography
Dr Wilson Chu, BPharm, MBA, MSc ClinPharm, DBA, is a registered pharmacist and academic with extensive professional experience in healthcare and business management. He began his academic journey in Hong Kong, followed by advanced studies at Malvern College in the United Kingdom. He earned a bachelor of pharmacy from Nottingham University (1996–1999), an MBA from Cardiff University (2001–2002) and a master of clinical pharmacy from Sunderland University (2006–2008). In 2022, he completed a doctor of business administration at Brittany University (France). Dr Wilson started his career as a pre-registration pharmacist at Hemel Hempstead Hospital, England, United Kingdom (1999–2000) and later worked as a pharmacist at Ealing Hospital, England, United Kingdom (2000–2001). He served briefly as a product specialist at Aventis Pharma, United Kingdom (2003–2004) before returning to Hong Kong, where he has been practising as a pharmacist since 2008. Since 2022, he has also served as a part-time project supervisor at the School for Higher and Professional Education, Hong Kong, China. Wilson’s research interests include AI adoption and healthcare management, with notable publications such as ‘Factors Influencing Mobile Payment Adoption in Hong Kong’ (2022). His contributions reflect a blend of clinical expertise and innovative management perspectives.
Jess L. C. Lam, BA, PGDE, MA, MCS, CEP, is a lecturer at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Sha Tin) with extensive experience in Hong Kong’s higher education sector. He holds a master of cultural studies from Lingnan University, a master of arts in liberal studies from the University of Science and Technology, a postgraduate diploma in IT education from Baptist University of Hong Kong and a bachelor of arts in philosophy from the University of Hong Kong. His professional journey includes roles as a programme coordinator at the School for Higher and Professional Education, a senior lecturer in sociology at Hong Kong Shue Yan University and the founder of a social enterprise. This diverse background informs his teaching and research interests, which span social enterprise and innovation, gerontology, digital media and culture, social policy and philosophy. As an educator and administrator, Mr Lam has demonstrated a strong commitment to curriculum development, creating new, industry-relevant courses. He is also recognised for his leadership in programme management, quality assurance and enhancing student learning through initiatives like international study tours. His contributions have been instrumental in programme revalidation and in fostering strong industry partnerships. Mr Lam is a published author, with a book on philosophy and film, as well as book chapters and journal articles on social and cultural analysis.
