Abstract
Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) aims to accelerate environmental footprint reductions at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) by moving beyond its direct sphere of control to proactively engage with airport business partners and other stakeholders to address specific environmental issues. This paper details how AAHK has adopted this approach to reduce airport-wide carbon emissions, manage aircraft cabin waste and increase food waste recycling at HKIA.

Author's Biography
Mike Kilburn joined Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) as senior manager, environment in September 2012. He is responsible for developing and implementing an environmental strategy and the business case for reducing the environmental footprint of Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), and is also responsible for developing a sustainability strategy for HKIA. Mike is the current chairman of Airports International Council (ACI) Asia-Pacific Regional Environment Committee and is an active member of the ACI World Environment Standing Committee. Prior to joining AAHK, he was head of environmental strategy for public policy think tank Civic Exchange from 2008 to 2012, where he managed research on biodiversity and air quality that led to the development of new legislation and policy on these issues. Mike has a degree in Chinese and management studies from the University of Durham, UK and a professional background in public relations consultancy.
Chris Lee is an assistant manager, sustainability at Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK). He is responsible for developing and rolling out AAHK’s sustainability strategy, management and reporting systems. Chris was also involved in the Green Airport Benchmarking Study which compared the environmental performance of Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) with other hub-sized airports and environmental leaders among airports worldwide. Prior to joining AAHK, he was a sustainability consultant for over seven years and worked on a wide range of sustainability and environmental consultancy projects and programmes.
