Ambient intelligence in the operating room: A case study
Abstract
Innovation in health care is essential to maximise the efficiency of hospital operations, especially in the operating rooms (OR). This case study examines the integration of a visually based ambient intelligence tool in the OR to enhance surgical workflow and patient care through real-time data analysis. The project involved deploying cameras in surgical suites to monitor performance metrics and streamline OR operations. A testing phase was implemented, which prioritised transparency regarding data usage and emphasised a culture of support rather than scrutiny. Pre- and post-implementation surveys were conducted to measure the tool’s impact on OR efficiency, workflow improvements and team dynamics. Overall, the findings demonstrated improvements in scheduling adherence, case duration accuracy and resource availability, indicating enhanced operational efficiency. Despite these gains, some challenges remained, so this underscores the significance of early stakeholder engagement, clear communication and a supportive change management process in the successful adoption of ambient intelligence tools.
