Rethinking value in healthcare supply chain management: A framework for population health, resilience and operational impact
Abstract
With the shift toward integrated, value-based care in healthcare delivery, the importance of healthcare supply chain management (HCSCM) has increased significantly. The days when HCSCM was limited to back-office tasks are gone; it now plays a crucial role in achieving fundamental system goals, improving clinical outcomes, enhancing operational resilience, reducing overall costs and supporting equitable access and environmental responsibility. This paper presents a five-dimensional value framework designed for contemporary HCSCM, supported by real-world case studies from organisations such as Mercy Health and Trinity Health. The paper argues that supply chain strategies must align with health systems’ overall goals and should be based on predictive analytics, integrated data systems, inclusive sourcing and agile logistics. In conclusion, the paper offers practical guidance for providers, suppliers, group purchasing organisations and policy makers to collaboratively reimagine supply chains as integral components of effective healthcare delivery and improved population health.
