Rethinking value in healthcare supply chain management: A framework for population health, resilience and operational impact
Abstract
With the shift toward integrated, value-based care in healthcare delivery, the importance of healthcare supply chain management (HCSCM) has increased significantly. The days when HCSCM was limited to back-office tasks are gone; it now plays a crucial role in achieving fundamental system goals, improving clinical outcomes, enhancing operational resilience, reducing overall costs and supporting equitable access and environmental responsibility. This paper presents a five-dimensional value framework designed for contemporary HCSCM, supported by real-world case studies from organisations such as Mercy Health and Trinity Health. The paper argues that supply chain strategies must align with health systems’ overall goals and should be based on predictive analytics, integrated data systems, inclusive sourcing and agile logistics. In conclusion, the paper offers practical guidance for providers, suppliers, group purchasing organisations and policy makers to collaboratively reimagine supply chains as integral components of effective healthcare delivery and improved population health. Author's Biography
Dameka Miller is the Senior Vice President of Supply Chain at Trinity Health. With over 20 years of healthcare experience in strategy and operations, Dameka oversees Trinity’s supply chain function, delivering substantial value for one of the nation’s largest, not-for profit health systems. She holds a Master of Public Administration from Western Michigan University, has earned a Lean Healthcare certificate from North Carolina State University and serves on several advisory councils focused on supply chain transformation.
Karen Conway is the CEO of ValueWorks and a former national chair of the Association for Health Care Resource & Materials Management, the supply chain association for the American Hospital Association, as well as an inductee into the Bellwether League Hall of Fame for Supply Chain Leadership. She is a co-author of ‘Strategic Management of the Healthcare Supply Chain’ (2022) and is recognised as an expert in healthcare value realisation and supply chain strategy. Previously, she served as Vice President of Healthcare Value at GHX. Karen often contributes to national healthcare policy and sustainability forums. Karen holds a BA from the Colorado College and a Master’s in the science of healthcare delivery from Arizona State University.
Marcel M. Zondag Prof Dr Marcel M. Zondag serves as the Director of the Supply Chain Management programme at Western Michigan University, which ranks among the top 25 SCM programmes in the Gartner national rankings of undergraduate programmes. Marcel earned a JD from Erasmus University in the Netherlands, as well as an MBA and PhD from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He has published peer-reviewed articles on supply chain resilience, procurement, supply chain relationship management and logistics. Additionally, he provides guidance to industry and public agencies regarding strategic sourcing and innovation.
