Abstract

Every generation has faced disruption, usually brought on by advances in technology or innovative movements. Today, industries across the globe are facing a digital disruption, brought on by the proliferation of smartphones, wearable devices, personalized apps and the Internet of Things. This has, in turn, resulted in an influx of data as never before. For the healthcare industry, navigating through this digital disruption is one of the greatest modern challenges. This paper explores the root cause of digital disruption as well as some examples of how other industries have responded and adapted and what the healthcare industry may learn from them. The paper also describes a case study on Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, which has taken significant steps to be successful in this new era. Finally, the paper dicusses three strategic steps healthcare organisations can take to ensure that they are rising to meet this digital disruption challenge.
