Abstract
Airports have widely varying political and legal frameworks so a comprehensive picture of their ownership pattern is difficult to achieve. There is, however, academic work and other ad hoc data on airport ownership and when examined at a European level clear trends emerge. This paper considers these trends and the reasons behind them in more detail, as well as looking to what the future might hold.

Author's Biography
Stuart Condie is a director at Direct Infrastructure Partners Ltd advising clients on airport business plans, aeronautical revenue, economic regulation, capital planning, ANS contracts and environmental issues. Stuart has been a non-executive director at Shoreham Port since 2010 and currently serves as chairman. Up to the end of 2008 Stuart was planning services director at BAA Ltd. with a team of 50 staff, and also held roles as chairman of BAA’s £2bn pension fund, director of Heathrow Express Operating Company and a member of the board of the SESAR Joint Undertaking. Prior to this he was director of Perth and Northern Territory Airports in Australia and held a variety of management posts at BAA. Stuart has an MA from Cambridge, an MBA from City University and is married with two daughters as well as being a UK/France dual national.
